Plot summary
Diane Weston is the head cheerleader of the A-Squad at Abraham Lincoln High School, and Jack Bartlett is the football team's quarterback. When Diane becomes pregnant, both sets of parents throw them out, and the two move into an apartment while staying in school. Jack works part-time at a video rental store, and the rent still goes unpaid. Diane's best friends and squadmates Kansas, Cleo, Lucy and Hannah agree to help her, and the group settles on a plan to rob a bank. They study heist films, and Kansas gets advice from her mother in the women's penitentiary about where to find guns, which leads them to an arms dealer named Hank Rogers. He offers the guns for free if the girls take his daughter Fern into the squad.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- The story was loosely based on a 1999 series of robberies carried out by four teenage girls from the Kingwood area of Houston, Texas.
- The film had a lengthy post-production and changed so much from the original that Lona Williams had her name removed, with the writing credited instead to the pseudonym Mandy Nelson.
- Gabrielle Union said years later that she and many of her Bring It On co-stars had auditioned for Sugar & Spice, which was seen as the more desirable project: "Bring It On was the cheerleading movie that was the consolation prize."
