Plot summary
Angela cares for her gravely ill mother in Naples and cannot pay for the medicine the doctor prescribes. Desperate, she copies the manner of a streetwalker she has seen, but the men she approaches only laugh at her. In a small café she reaches for a customer's loose change, and the shopkeeper and Police Sergeant Neri catch her in the act. A court gives her a year in the workhouse. She slips away from the two carabineers escorting her and leaves the city, finding shelter with a poor caravan circus run by Mascetto, who puts her on stilts and in sideshow turns. There she meets Gino, a struggling painter who has joined the troupe to paint its banners and signs.
