Plot summary

Dante meets Alice when he kisses her by mistake at a New Year's Eve party: she is dressed exactly like his date, and the two become a couple. She paints; he gives his hours to work. For his fortieth birthday in October, Alice and their friends put together a party at their home. Dante arrives very late, after visiting his father, and Valerio, his oldest friend, hands him tickets for a roller coaster they always meant to ride. Dante says he has no time. He blows out the candles, and the party ends. He wakes a year later, with no memory of the months in between, finds Alice vomiting and learns she is pregnant.
