Plot summary
A truck crosses the Sahara carrying Martin and an empty coffin to a pumping station belonging to an American oil company. Martin has signed on for five years and takes the place of the worker in the coffin. Kramer, an authoritarian American of German roots, runs the station, and the two men clash from the outset. The other workers are Fletcher, a noisy jokester, Macey, an uptight British former major, and Santos, a quiet Spaniard who would rather be left alone with his work. The work is tiring, and Kramer forces the men to play poker with him at night. After a car crashes into the station's oil barrels, the men find Catherine and Jimmy in the wreck; Jimmy is her former husband and is badly hurt.
