Plot summary

Sophie Hagan spent her working life as a nurse, and she has opened her house as the Cottonwood residence, a transitions shelter where homeless people get a leg up and a way back into society. The residents carry very different burdens: a woman with a terminal illness, an alcoholic magician, a veteran living with PTSD, a young drug addict and a mother in grief, along with others facing depression and the aftermath of human trafficking. Therapy sessions and the household's sense of family are meant to help them overcome what plagues them. Sophie watches over the place, which is under pressure from society's norms and from acquaintances who will not let go of the people living there.
