Plot summary
The Villages is a Florida retirement community, the world's largest, where thousands of retirees spend their final chapters. Four residents on its margins are still looking for happiness. Anne and Reggie Kincer are married, and Reggie's grip on reality is deteriorating as he uses psychedelic drugs. Barbara Lochiatto is a widow who wants a second love. Dennis Dean is an 82-year-old bachelor who lives out of a van and hopes a wealthy woman will support him in the years he has left. The community advertises a good life, with synchronized swimming, pickleball and discounted funeral packages, and most residents take up its outlook.

- Director Lance Oppenheim landed Darren Aronofsky as a producer by tracking down his email online as a college senior and sending unsolicited cold emails for nearly five years, until Aronofsky saw a sizzle reel and signed on.
- Before shooting, Oppenheim lived in a rented room at The Villages for nearly thirty days alongside retired rodeo clowns to embed himself in the retirement community's social fabric.
- At its 2020 Sundance Film Festival premiere, the film was the sole documentary selected for the festival's NEXT section, a category for bold, forward-thinking storytelling.
- Oppenheim first pitched the project as a short documentary; The New York Times' Kathleen Lingo pushed him to make it a feature, which became one of the paper's first feature film productions.
- Cinematographer David Bolen, who had worked with Oppenheim since Oppenheim was 17, built the film's hyperreal look from Larry Sultan's Pictures from Home series, Ulrich Seidl, Todd Haynes' Safe and Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands to mirror The Villages' manicured landscapes.
