Plot summary
Agata is a peasant mother in rural northeastern Italy in the early 1900s. Her baby is stillborn, and because the infant was never baptized, Catholic tradition holds that its soul is condemned to Limbo. Agata hears of a sanctuary in the mountains of the north whose priest is said to revive a dead child long enough for baptism, and she decides to make the journey so that her child can enter Heaven. The baby's body travels with her, carried in a coffin on her back. On the road she is joined by Lynx, a rugged new acquaintance who acts as her guide.
