Plot summary
Stevo has finished college and lives as a punk in Salt Lake City in 1985, alongside his best friend Bob, nicknamed Heroin. Bob's nickname is ironic, since needles frighten him and he considers most drugs dangerous. The pair drift from party to party and trade clashes with members of other subcultures, rednecks above all. Stevo's divorced parents were hippies who became wealthy professionals, and he reads their success as selling out. His grades are excellent, so his father applies to Harvard Law School for him, and Stevo turns the acceptance down.
