Plot summary
Lizzy is a sculptor who also assists her mother in the arts administration office at the Oregon College of Art and Craft. She is finishing a series of clay figures showing women in joyful or anguished movement for a coming show. Jo, her neighbor and landlord, is a rival artist; Lizzy repeatedly asks her to repair the water heater, but Jo attends to other matters, such as a tire swing for the backyard. Lizzy takes a Tuesday off work to spend more time with her sculptures. In the middle of one night, a pigeon gets into the house and her cat maims it. Lizzy tosses the bird outside; in the morning Jo finds it and hands its care back to Lizzy, who resents the task and then takes the pigeon to a vet.

- Showing Up was originally conceived as a biopic of Canadian artist Emily Carr, focusing on the 10 years she spent as a landlord hoping it would give her more time for her art but instead forced her to paint less. Kelly Reichardt abandoned the idea after a Canadian passport officer's remark about Carr's fame took the wind out of the filmmakers' sails.
