Plot summary
Asta Cadell, a barrister from Perth, is riding her motorcycle through outback Western Australia when it fails on her. While she waits in the small town of Ginborak for replacement parts, the town's men call out suggestive comments to her and Sergeant Wal Cuddy tells her not to stay long. Local mechanic Tim Curtis lets her use his tools and lodge in his guest house. His daughter Lizzie comes home distressed, and Cadell comforts her. Cadell learns that the town's young men have harassed and assaulted several girls while the residents look away. She speaks out, drawing the hostility of the youths and of the meat-processing factory's owner, and defends herself when they turn on her.

- Three weeks before shooting began, Shame's financiers commissioned a new draft in which the barrister Asta Cadell was far more violent and vigilante-like, but the draft was never used.
- Director Steve Jodrell said the financiers were not supportive of the finished film until Paul Barron found investors to buy out their interests, which enabled Shame to be released in cinemas.
- Beverley Blankenship was inspired to write about a woman on a motorcycle after seeing Mad Max, and she and Michael Brindley decided to make a modern-day Western. Her eleven-page treatment won finance from the Women's Film Fund for a first draft.
- Director Steve Jodrell said no-one wanted to touch the film because they could not work out what it was about, though writers Michael Brindley and Beverly Blankenship had designed it as a B-grade drive-in movie.
