Plot summary
Menaka leaves her newborn near Rishi Kanva's hermitage and returns to heaven, and Kanva raises the girl, Shakuntala, in the forest. One summer King Dushyant chases an antelope there and is stopped by an ascetic, who says the animal belongs to Kanva's ashrama and invites him to visit. Dushyant finds three young women watering the plants and is drawn to Shakuntala. He learns her parents are the sage Vishvamitra and Menaka, which makes her a suitable bride for him, but he keeps his own identity hidden. A stampeding elephant scatters the group, and he sends his men away from the ashrama. Ascetics ask him to guard their yajna, and he agrees. Shakuntala confesses her feelings, and the two marry by gandharva rites; he leaves for his capital, promising to send a guard for her.
