Plot summary
A test subject dies at Project Shadowzone, and NASA Captain Hickock is sent to the site, a facility underground that was largely deserted in 1962. Tommy Shivers, the last man on the maintenance staff, escorts him through it. Dr. Erhardt, the second in command, presents Dr. Kidwell, Wiley, the only computer engineer, and Dr. Jonathan Van Fleet, who leads the project. Two patients remain in sleep chambers, held in extended deep sleep, a state the project calls EDS.
