Plot summary
Meera is 23 and works as a makeup artist, trying to build a career in the film industry while the pressures of her job and of city life wear her down. Her parents have died, and her grandmother Krishnaveni is the last relative she has. Krishnaveni lives in a village and supports herself by singing oppari, the mourning songs performed at funerals, a long-standing village custom. An old quarrel in the family left Meera unwilling to see her grandmother. When she is made to leave the city, she goes to stay at her grandmother's home, and the two women, apart for years, share a house while the dispute between them stays unresolved.

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Director Anand Ravichandran, a former software official, researched oppari, the ancient Tamil way of mourning the dead, for the film, learning about Ethiopia and other rice-eating cultures including Mexico, where death is celebrated, which prompted him to write it as a story.
- The film was shot in 17 days in Appanur near Paramakudi, where the weather and the "pin-drop silence" made shooting challenging; background noise forced retakes, so the team used sync sound instead of dubbing.
