Plot summary
In 1725, in the Edo period, Masakata Matsudaira is lord of the Aizu clan. Isaburo Sasahara is a vassal of the lord and a swordsman of great skill, and his chief rival is his friend Tatewaki Asano. Isaburo lives a henpecked life. One of the lord's advisors orders that Isaburo's elder son, Yogoro, marry Ichi, the lord's former concubine, who has borne the lord a son. The lord is displeased with her. Isaburo wants to refuse, but the family agrees with much trepidation. Yogoro accepts the woman, and the two fall in love, marry, and a daughter, Tomi, is born to them.
