Plot summary
Bridget is thirty-four years old and waiting tables in Evanston, Illinois, where she has not yet become the writer she intends to be. At the start of the summer she has an abortion and then lands a much-needed job nannying Frances, a rambunctious, obstinate six-year-old whose mothers, Maya and Annie, have just brought home a baby boy. Frances feels displaced by her new brother. Annie, a lawyer, keeps long hours at work, and Maya is sinking into postpartum depression, leaving strains in their marriage. Bridget also takes up with Jace, a younger man, in a casual fling that leaves her pregnant.
