Vinton Hayworth

Vinton Hayworth was an American actor who also wrote plays and screenplays. He took up acting while still a teenager and spent the early 1920s as a pioneering radio announcer in Washington, D.C., New York City, and Chicago, later taking roles on many radio programs. By 1933 he was working in films under the stage name Jack Arnold, first in small parts, often sneaky or good-natured characters, and sometimes in bigger ones such as China Passage (1937). His Jack Arnold credits ended in the early 1940s, and after two years on Broadway from 1942 to 1944 he returned to California, where he continued making films into the 1960s and appeared in more than 90. He helped found the union AFRA, later AFTRA, and was its president from 1951 to 1954. Television work included Zorro as Magistrado Carlos Galindo and, finally, I Dream of Jeannie as General Winfield Schaeffer, a role he played from 1969 until his death in 1970.
