Biography

Tony Lip, born Frank Anthony Vallelonga in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania and raised in the Bronx, was an American actor. After serving in the United States Army from 1951 to 1953, he worked at the Copacabana nightclub, where he met Francis Ford Coppola and Louis DiGiaimo, which led to his film debut in The Godfather. He became best known as crime boss Carmine Lupertazzi on the HBO series The Sopranos, and he portrayed real-life mobsters Philip Giaccone in Donnie Brasco (1997) and Francesco Manzo in Goodfellas. He was also a co-writer of the 2005 book Shut Up and Eat!. His time driving and guarding pianist Don Shirley on a tour from 1962 to 1963 inspired the 2018 film Green Book, in which Viggo Mortensen played him and received an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. He died in 2013.
