Terrence Malick
Biography
Terrence Malick, an American filmmaker linked to the New Hollywood generation, makes movies that blend philosophical themes with meditative voice-overs. Born in Ottawa, Illinois, he studied philosophy at Harvard and Oxford before turning to film, earning a Golden Globe directing nomination for his second feature, Days of Heaven (1978). His debut had been the crime drama Badlands (1973), and he wrote the screenplay for Pocket Money (1972). He returned to directing with The Thin Red Line (1998), which took the Golden Bear at Berlin and drew seven Academy Award nominations. The New World (2005) and The Tree of Life (2011) followed, the latter winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes and bringing him another Academy Award nomination for directing. Later films include To the Wonder and Knight of Cups, along with Song to Song, A Hidden Life, and the documentary Voyage of Time (2016). Critics have been split on his work, praising its cinematography while finding the plots thin.

Early training
Malick earned an MFA from the new AFI Conservatory in 1969, then started his film career, directing the short Lanton Mills. There he made contacts including actor Jack Nicholson, Jack Fisk and agent Mike Medavoy.
Behind the camera
Malick wrote early uncredited drafts of Dirty Harry and Drive, He Said, and took the pseudonym David Whitney to co-write The Gravy Train.
A role that slipped away
Malick left the Che Guevara film he had written for Steven Soderbergh after a year and a half when financing stalled, and Soderbergh directed it himself as Che.
Behind the camera
Malick's Q project, a Paramount film about the origins of life that he developed before vanishing from public view, was never made but fed The Tree of Life and became the basis for Voyage of Time.
