Robert Llewellyn

Biography

Robert Llewellyn is a British actor and writer who has also worked as a comedian and television presenter. Born in Northampton, England, he started out performing with the alternative comedy theater group The Joeys in the early 1980s. He joined Red Dwarf in 1989 as the mechanoid Kryten, a role he played across later series. He presented the engineering gameshow Scrapheap Challenge and other programs, and he voiced Old Joe in Christmas Carol: The Movie (2001) and the gryphon in Mirrormask (2005). He also appeared in Ashens and the Polybius Heist (2020). Llewellyn co-wrote an episode of Red Dwarf and is the author of fourteen books, including novels and nonfiction. Carpool, his web series, ran between 2009 and 2014.

Paul Jackson, who produced Red Dwarf, saw Llewellyn perform his one-man Edinburgh Festival Fringe comedy Mammon, Robot Born of Woman, in which a robot turns more human and starts behaving badly. Jackson then asked him to try out for Kryten.

Llewellyn's first showbusiness work grew out of amateur cabaret evenings he organized in a riverside warehouse overlooking Tower Bridge, which led him to help form the alternative comedy theater group The Joeys and quit shoemaking within six months.

Llewellyn was the sole British actor from Red Dwarf to take part at the start in a proposed American version, though Craig Charles and Chris Barrie were also asked to return to their roles.
