Patrick McKenna
Biography
Patrick McKenna is a Canadian comedian and actor who got his start in improvisation at Second City in Toronto before building a long career in television. Born in Hamilton, Ontario, he studied at Sheridan College and worked as night manager at Second City before joining its main stage in 1983, then spent five years doing stand-up across Canada and the United States. Steve Smith hired him as the twitchy sidekick Harold Green on The Red Green Show, a part he played for 15 years and reprised in the film Duct Tape Forever. He also played Marty Stephens on Traders, and his work on both shows earned him two Gemini Awards, including a rare drama and comedy double at the 13th Gemini Awards in 1998. Other credits include Stargate SG-1, the 2002 miniseries Trudeau, John A: Birth of a Country and the 2011 horror film Silent but Deadly.

Behind the award

Big break
McKenna got his big break at a Second City show in the late 1980s, when Steve Smith came looking for a sidekick for The Red Green Show and offered him the job after watching his twitchy-nerd character.
Early training
To help pay for tuition, McKenna rose to night manager at Second City, where he learned how improv worked. In 1983, his audition for the main stage was a success.
A change of course
In the 1980s, McKenna gave stand-up comedy a try, doing his act for five years in Canada and the United States.
