Plot summary

Rebecca Fine and Henry Kringle meet in New York, where they share an apartment and fall in love. Just before Christmas, Henry proposes, and the two decide to spend the holidays with their families so the parents can hear the news in person. Rebecca comes from a Los Angeles family; Henry was raised in a small Midwestern town where his father still hopes he will take over the family law practice. In the Kringle home, the customs of the two households collide, most sharply between Marilyn Kringle and Suzie Fine, who disagree about how the wedding and the holidays should look. Henry's childhood friend, Kristy Easterbrook, whom his parents once hoped he would marry, is also in town.
