Nick Broomfield

Biography

Nick Broomfield is an English documentary filmmaker born in London in 1948. He studied law at University College Cardiff and political science at the University of Essex, then attended the National Film and Television School. His early work followed a conventional cinema verite approach shaped by Frederick Wiseman and D. A. Pennebaker. After more than ten years, he changed course and first put himself on screen in Chicken Ranch (1983), building a self-reflective method in which the process of making a film becomes part of the subject. Soldier Girls, co-directed with Joan Churchill, took first prize at the BAFTA Film Awards, and Kurt & Courtney (1998) was chosen for the Sundance Film Festival. In 2006, he began using non-actors in scripted projects that he calls Direct Cinema, including Ghosts for Channel 4 and Battle for Haditha (2007), which received two international awards.
