Moby
Biography
Moby is an American musician and songwriter who started on classical guitar and piano at nine, then played in punk bands during the 1980s before moving into electronic dance music. He settled in New York City in 1989 and became a busy DJ, producer, and remixer. His 1991 track Go brought him a mainstream breakthrough, particularly in Europe, and the 1990s brought a string of Billboard dance chart hits. The album Everything Is Wrong (1995) drew critical praise, with Spin naming it Album of the Year, while Animal Rights (1996) turned off his dance following. Play (1999) became an unexpected worldwide hit and his best-selling record. He followed it with albums such as 18 (2002), Hotel (2005), Last Night (2008), Wait for Me (2009), Destroyed (2011), and Innocents (2013), later adding orchestral reworkings on Reprise (2021) and Resound NYC (2023). He has also made ambient music and film scores, including the song Extreme Ways for the Bourne films.

Big break
Moby's mainstream breakthrough came with his 1991 single "Go", a remix of a B-side that sampled Angelo Badalamenti's "Laura Palmer's Theme" from Twin Peaks and reached No. 10 in the UK.
First role
Moby's first live electronic music gig was in summer 1990 at Club MK, where he wore a suit; his future manager Eric Härle was in the audience and remembered the set as technically messy but intriguing.
Big break
Moby's 2021 orchestral album Reprise came after a Deutsche Grammophon representative approached him following a 2018 performance with the Los Angeles Philharmonic; it was recorded with the Budapest Art Orchestra and charted in 16 countries.
