Biography

Menahem Golan was an Israeli director, producer and screenwriter who, with his cousin Yoram Globus, built The Cannon Group into a prolific maker of low and mid-budget genre films in the 1980s. Born in Tiberias, he trained in theater direction in London and studied filmmaking at New York University, then staged plays in Israel and assisted Roger Corman. He directed Operation Thunderbolt (1977) and produced Lemon Popsicle (1978), and Cannon's output ranged from Delta Force and Runaway Train to sequels of Death Wish. Its comic book-style pictures included Masters of the Universe and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. Golan resigned from Cannon in 1989 and later ran 21st Century Film Corporation. He produced more than 200 films and directed 44, and his awards included the Israel Prize in 1999; he was nominated for an Academy Award for Operation Thunderbolt and a BAFTA for Otello.
