Martha Higareda
Biography
Martha Higareda is a Mexican actress, producer and screenwriter who started out on stage as a child and left her native Tabasco for Mexico City at 14 to pursue acting. After studying performing arts, she took the lead in the Mexican television series Enamórate in 2003 and moved into film, earning a Silver Goddess Award for Sexo, amor y otras perversiones. Her first American part came in Borderland (2007), followed by Smokin' Aces 2: Assassins' Ball (2010), the Disney film McFarland, USA (2015) and Hello Herman (2012), while she also wrote, produced and acted in her own projects such as Casese Quien Pueda. She won a Mayahuel Award for Mariachi Gringo at the Guadalajara International Film Festival, both produced and headlined No manches Frida (2016), and played detective Kristin Ortega in Netflix's Altered Carbon. She later took the lead in the Hulu anthology episode Culture Shock (2019).

In 2016 Higareda both produced and acted in No manches Frida, playing Miss Lucy, a shy but passionate teacher who falls for a criminal. She suggested Omar Chaparro for that part, and the film, costing $2.5 million, earned 23 million dollars.

Higareda began acting on stage at a very early age and also trained in jazz, flamenco, tap and folklore dancing, moving from Tabasco to Mexico City at 14 to pursue acting.

An advanced student, Higareda started college at 15 and studied Communications at El Tecnologico de Monterrey. She went to college in the mornings, acting school in the evenings and performed in theater on weekends.
Big break
In 2007 Higareda got her first American film role, in Borderland, which she worked on with Brian Presley and Beto Cuevas. At the American Film Market an agent introduced her to Craig Shapiro, who persuaded her to move to LA.
