Kenji Takaki
Biography
Kenji Takaki was a Japanese-born British merchant seaman who later became a character actor in theater and film. Born in Ehime Prefecture, Japan, he spent years at sea before taking small roles whenever a gentleman of Asian appearance was needed. After World War Two he appeared on stage and in several British films of the 1950s and 1960s. His major stage role was Tojo in Willis Hall's play, staged at the Royal Court Theatre in 1959, and he later repeated it on screen. He was best remembered as Sergeant Takagi in A Town Like Alice (1956), an Imperial Japanese Army soldier escorting women prisoners, and for his part in the film adaptation of that play. In both, he spoke little or no English, and his characters added poignancy. He died in 1984.
