Jim Morrison
Biography
Jim Morrison was an American singer-songwriter and poet best known as the frontman and main lyricist of the rock band the Doors, which he started in 1965 in Venice, California with keyboardist Ray Manzarek. The group broke through with the number-one US single Light My Fire from their debut album, and Morrison recorded six studio albums with the band, often reciting poetry while they played live. He studied theater, film and cinematography at UCLA, graduated in 1965, and self-published two poetry volumes in 1969. He financed a film project begun in 1969 and took the main role, a hitchhiker turned killer and car thief. Rolling Stone, NME and Classic Rock all placed him among rock's greatest singers, and in 1993 the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inducted him posthumously with the other members of the Doors. He died in 1971.

Behind the camera
In 1969 Morrison began a cinematic project, paid for it himself and set up his own production company so he could keep complete control. He took the main role, a hitchhiker who becomes a killer and car thief.
Big break
Morrison and Manzarek first met months earlier while studying cinematography. That summer they became the Doors' first members, forming the group.
Own stunts
Morrison played grand piano on "Orange County Suite" and a Moog synthesizer on "Strange Days", though he otherwise did not play instruments in the studio.
Behind the camera
Morrison self-published two poetry volumes in 1969, The Lords / Notes on Vision and The New Creatures. The Lords holds short descriptions of places, people and events plus his cinema thoughts, while The New Creatures verses read as more poetic. No other writings of his came out while he lived.
