Joe Franklin
Biography
Joe Franklin was an American radio and television host, author, and actor from New York City. He was born in The Bronx and started writing skits for The Kate Smith Hour at 14, then at 16 began his official entertainment career as a record picker on Martin Block's Make Believe Ballroom. His television talk show premiered in January 1951 on WJZ-TV, shifted to WOR-TV in 1962, and stayed there until 1993. An A&E documentary credited him with creating the television talk show. Guinness World Records listed his run as the longest continuous on-air TV talk show hosting stint, longer than Johnny Carson's by more than a decade. Known as The King of Nostalgia for his focus on old-time show business, he appeared as himself in Broadway Danny Rose (1984) and Tracey Ullman Takes on New York (1993). He also wrote books, including Up Late with Joe Franklin.
