Jane Goodall
Biography
Jane Goodall was an English scientist who studied chimpanzees and became known for her chimpanzee research and conservation work. She was born in Hampstead, London, and in 1957 traveled to Kenya, where she met paleontologist Louis Leakey. He sent her to Gombe Stream National Park in Tanzania in 1960 to observe chimpanzees. Her work showed that these animals make and use tools, experience complex feelings, build long relationships and even wage organized conflict, findings that changed ideas about what separates humans from other animals. She earned a doctorate in ethology from Cambridge in 1965. Her first book, In the Shadow of Man, appeared in 1971. In 1977 she started the Jane Goodall Institute, and in 1991 she began the Roots & Shoots youth program. She wrote 32 books, and more than 40 films were made about her, including the documentary Jane (2017). Her honors included the Kyoto Prize and the Templeton Prize, along with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Did you know?!
A first
In 1962, Louis Leakey sent Goodall to the University of Cambridge even though she had no degree. She became the eighth person permitted to pursue a PhD there without first earning a bachelor's degree.
A first
After Leakey raised the funds, Goodall traveled to Gombe Stream National Park on 14 July 1960. She became the first of the group later known as the Trimates.
Early training
In 1958, Leakey sent Goodall to London. There, Osman Hill taught her about primate behavior, while John Napier instructed her in primate anatomy.
Getting ready for a role
Goodall set herself apart by naming the chimpanzees she studied instead of giving them numbers, a break from the near-universal practice of the time.
Behind the camera
Goodall founded the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977 to support the Gombe research and to protect chimpanzees and their habitats, and it grew to nineteen offices worldwide.
Behind the camera
Goodall's global youth program, Roots & Shoots, started in 1991, when 12 local teenagers met her on the back porch of her home in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. As of 2010, it had more than 10,000 groups across over 100 countries.
