Plot summary
Jane Goodall arrives in Tanzania in 1957 with no scientific training, sent by Louis Leakey to watch chimpanzees. Five months into her observations she reports that the animals shape objects into tools, a finding the scientific community disputes while the press greets her with hostility. A grant from the National Geographic Society follows, and Hugo van Lawick is sent to film her work. Their relationship turns romantic. Jane offers the chimps food so she can watch them at closer range, and when the dominant female, Flo, gives birth to a son, Flint, it is the first time a chimpanzee mother and infant are observed together from birth in the wild.
