Greg McClure
Biography
Greg McClure was an actor who moved from bodybuilding into Hollywood films in the 1940s, usually cast as rugged, brutish types. Born Dale D'Orr in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1915, he grew up in Oakland, California, played junior college football there, and went to Hollywood with his brother Harvey to open a gym. After stage and film extra work and non-speaking soldier bits in The Iron Major (1943) and See Here, Private Hargrove (1944), a chance audition won him the lead in the Bing Crosby produced The Great John L. (1945), and he took the name Greg McClure for the part. The Army drafted him soon afterward. Freelancing again, he played boxers and heavies in Bury Me Dead (1947), Lulu Belle (1948) and Roaring City (1951), and appeared as Hammerhead Hogan in Thunder in the Pines (1948) and as a henchman in the 1949 serial Batman and Robin. He left performing in 1951 and died in 2012.
