Gale Robbins

Biography

Gale Robbins was an American actress and singer who worked as a model and dance band vocalist before moving into films. Born in 1921, she sang in a Chicago stage show in 1939, performed with bands led by Phil Levant and Jan Garber, and appeared on radio, including The Ben Bernie War Workers' Program. She signed with 20th Century Fox in 1942 and made her screen debut in In the Meantime, Darling (1944). Her film work included My Dear Secretary (1948), The Barkleys of Broadway (1949), Calamity Jane (1953) and Three Little Words (1950), in which she sang All Alone Monday. On television she hosted Hollywood House from 1949 to 1950 and guested on Gunsmoke, Trackdown, Perry Mason, 77 Sunset Strip and Mister Ed; she released the album I'm a Dreamer in 1958. Her motion picture career was recognized with a Hollywood Walk of Fame star at 6510 Hollywood Boulevard.

About the name
Robbins changed her professional name in 1939 while singing at Chicago's Hotel Sherman, adopting Gale from her middle name after performing as Betty Robbins.
A first
In 1955 Robbins became the first performer Screen Gems signed to a contract covering more than one picture, agreeing to a number of Damon Runyon Theater segments.
A change of course
Robbins attended the Vera Jones Modeling School, and while she was there she posed for many magazine covers and ads.
