Big break
Martin's biggest hit came in 1941 when he recorded an instrumental arrangement of the first movement of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1; Ray Austin added lyrics and it was re-recorded as "Tonight We Love" with Clyde Rogers singing, selling over a million copies by 1946.
A first
Martin later recorded "A Lover's Concerto", a piece adapted from baroque composer Christian Petzold's "Minuet in G major". Pop group The Toys released their version two decades afterward.
About the name
In 1947 Martin recorded the song "Pico and Sepulveda" using the alias "Felix Figueroa and his Orchestra." The track later turned up often on Dr. Demento's syndicated radio show.
