Freddie Steele
Biography
Freddie Steele was an American boxer who became world middleweight champion and later acted in Hollywood films. Born in Seattle, he fought professionally and lost only two of his first ten years' bouts, taking the National Boxing Association middleweight title from Babe Risko in a unanimous fifteen round decision in Seattle in 1936. He defended the belt several times, including wins over Gorilla Jones and Risko again, before Al Hostak knocked him out in the first round in 1938. Steele then moved into pictures, doubling for Errol Flynn in Gentleman Jim (1942) and playing Bugsy, one of the Marines at the center of Preston Sturges's Hail the Conquering Hero (1944). He was Sergeant Steve Warnicki in The Story of G.I. Joe (1945) and appeared in nearly thirty films, usually uncredited, before leaving Hollywood in the 1950s. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1999.
