Duff McKagan
Biography
Duff McKagan is an American musician who played bass in Guns N' Roses for twelve years, beginning when he joined the hard rock band in 1985. He grew up in Seattle, learned to play bass from his brother, and worked his way through local punk groups such as The Vains, The Fastbacks, The Fartz and 10 Minute Warning before heading to Los Angeles. His first solo record, Believe in Me, came out in 1993, and after leaving Guns N' Roses in 1997 he fronted Loaded on vocals and rhythm guitar and played in Velvet Revolver from 2002 to 2008, winning a Grammy with that group. He also spent short spells with Alice in Chains, Jane's Addiction and Hollywood Vampires, and he rejoined Guns N' Roses in 2016. He wrote columns for Seattle Weekly, Playboy and ESPN and published the memoir It's So Easy (And Other Lies) in 2011.

A first
McKagan resigned as bassist in August 1997. Of the Appetite for Destruction lineup, he was the last member to leave Guns N' Roses.
About the name
McKagan played bass in a punk band called The Vains, which he started in 1979. While with the group he went by the stage name Nico Teen.
Big break
McKagan replaced bassist Ole Beich in Guns N' Roses in March 1985, and the new lineup played its debut gig at The Troubadour after two days of rehearsal.
A first
In 1993, McKagan put out his first solo album, Believe in Me, where he handled lead vocals and performed almost all of the instruments himself.
