David Battley
Biography
David Battley was an English actor who worked in stage and screen, typically in comedic parts. Born in Battersea, London, he employed a dry, ironic manner in his performances and became a reliable character actor and comic foil. On television, he appeared in the satire BBC-3 and the drama Redcap during the 1960s, and later in Eric Sykes' sitcom, a 1975 adaptation of Moll Flanders, and a 1977 Christmas special of The Good Life. He played John the hippy barman in The Beiderbecke Tapes and had roles in The Bill, Lovejoy, and Mr. Bean. In Rutland Weekend Television, he was a foil to Eric Idle and took the Paul McCartney role in the original Rutles sketch. His films included Hotel Paradiso (1966), Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971), S.O.S. Titanic (1979), and Krull (1983). He died in 2003.
