Cliff Richard
Biography
Cliff Richard is a British singer and actor who, fronting the Shadows, was the leading figure in British popular music in the years before the Beatles. He started out as a rock and roll performer, and his 1958 single Move It is often called the first genuine British rock and roll record. On screen he appeared in Expresso Bongo (1959), The Young Ones (1961), Summer Holiday (1963) and Wonderful Life (1964), films that made him Britain's top box office draw in 1962 and 1963. His television series It's Cliff Richard ran from 1970 to 1976, and he sang for Britain at Eurovision in 1968, finishing second with Congratulations. He later returned to rock with the album I'm Nearly Famous, which yielded the US hit Devil Woman, and in 1979 We Don't Talk Anymore topped the UK chart. He holds 14 UK No. 1 singles and was knighted in 1995, the first rock star to receive the honor.

About the name
Cliff Richard got his stage name when entrepreneur Harry Greatorex wanted a rock-sounding name; Cliff suggested a cliff face, and Ian Samwell added Richard as a tribute to Little Richard.
First role
At Richard's first session, Paramor gave him "Schoolboy Crush", which American Bobby Helms had already recorded. For the B-side, Richard could cut one of his own songs: "Move It", written by the Drifters' Samwell on a number 715 Green Line bus.
A first
In May 1989, Richard put out his 100th single, "The Best of Me", and became the first British artist to reach that number of singles.
A first
Richard has had 14 singles reach No. 1 in the UK. No other singer has managed a UK No. 1 single in each of five decades in a row.
A first
Richard and Presley are the only acts whose singles have reached the UK charts in each of the chart's first six decades, spanning the 1950s through the 2000s.
A first
Between 1960's "A Voice in the Wilderness" and 1965's "The Minute You're Gone," Richard landed 23 straight UK top ten hits. That streak, which his No. 12 single "On My Word" brought to a close in 1965, remains a record for a male artist.
