Cat Power

Charlyn Marie Marshall, who records and performs as Cat Power, is an American singer-songwriter and occasional actress. Raised in the South by her grandmother, she took to blues and rock and roll and moved to New York City in the early 1990s. After opening for Liz Phair, she met Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley, who played on her first albums Dear Sir (1995) and Myra Lee (1996), both spare, somber indie rock sets. Through the late 1990s she made blues- and folk-influenced records, then issued The Covers Record (2000), whose take on Sea of Love was used in Juno (2007). Subsequent releases included You Are Free (2003), with Dave Grohl and Eddie Vedder, The Greatest (2006), and Jukebox (2008). Sun (2012) drew critical acclaim and reached number 10 on the Billboard 200, her first U.S. top ten. Marshall also modeled, inspired Marc Jacobs and Karl Lagerfeld, and made her film debut in My Blueberry Nights (2007) opposite Jude Law.
