Biography

Carl Bernstein is an American investigative journalist and author who began in newsrooms as a teenager. Born in Washington, D.C., he worked as a copyboy for The Washington Star at 16, reported for the Elizabeth Daily Journal, and joined The Washington Post in 1966. In 1972 he was paired with Bob Woodward to cover the Watergate break-in; their reporting connected the burglars to a slush fund and helped prompt investigations that ended with Richard Nixon's resignation in 1974. They wrote All the President's Men (1974) and The Final Days (1976). After leaving the Post in 1977, Bernstein moved into broadcast news, serving as ABC News Washington bureau chief from 1980 to 1984, and later commenting for CNN and CBS. His other books include Loyalties, His Holiness, A Woman in Charge, and Chasing History.
