Bonnie Raitt
Biography
Bonnie Raitt is an American singer and songwriter whose self-titled debut album arrived in 1971. Born in Burbank, California, she grew up with a pianist mother and a musical-theater actor father. Her early records blended roots music, rock, blues, country, and folk, and she became a frequent session player. After years of limited commercial success, she broke through with Nick of Time (1989), which topped the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy for Album of the Year. Luck of the Draw (1991) also sold millions, as did Longing in Their Hearts (1994). Her 2022 single Just Like That won a Grammy for Song of the Year. She appeared as herself in Urban Cowboy (1980) and sang background vocals for Roy Orbison and Friends: A Black and White Night (1988). She has received 13 competitive Grammys from 31 nominations, entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, and received a Kennedy Center Honor in 2024.

Did you know?!
A first
Raitt's main touring guitar is a customized Fender Stratocaster she calls Brownie. In 1996 that guitar became the basis for a signature model, and she was the first female musician to get a signature Fender line.
Big break
Raitt's first commercial breakthrough came with the 1977 album Sweet Forgiveness, which produced a hit single in her remake of "Runaway".
A role that slipped away
Raitt was dropped from the record company's roster the day after mastering wrapped on Tongue & Groove, since the label was unhappy with how she had sold up to then.
Early training
Raitt never had formal guitar lessons. She shaped her own style by imitating the musicians of the American folk revival that began in the 1950s.
