Andy Russell
Biography
Andy Russell was an American singer and actor who performed traditional pop and Latin music. He started as a teenager with a local swing band, then played drums and sang with Stan Kenton's and Gus Arnheim's orchestras. Arnheim urged him to sing in English and Spanish, a style that drew attention. After Johnny Mercer heard him, Russell recorded for Capitol Records, and his versions of Bésame Mucho, Amor, and What a Diff'rence a Day Made became hits in the 1940s. He sang on radio shows, especially Your Hit Parade, and appeared in Breakfast in Hollywood (1946), Make Mine Music (1946), and Copacabana (1947). In 1954 he moved to Mexico, where he became a leading recording, radio, television, film, and nightclub performer. From 1956 to 1965 he hosted El Show de Andy Russell in Argentina. He later returned to the United States and topped Billboard's Easy Listening chart in 1967 with It's Such a Pretty World Today. He died in 1992.

About the name
A bandleader once told Andy Russell he would be called Russell, after Russell Columbo, a famous singer of that era who years earlier had taken Bing Crosby's place.
First role
Russell began his career in 1934, when he was a 15-year-old junior high school student, by singing with a local swing band led by don Ramón Cruz.
Early training
Russell got some old records and began learning drums, practicing down in the cellar and working on keeping good time.
A first
Russell sang "Bésame Mucho" in both Spanish and English. He was the first vocalist to give popular songs Spanish and English treatments, often with an English chorus then a Spanish one.
A role that slipped away
Tommy Dorsey offered Russell a job playing only drums because Dorsey already had a young Frank Sinatra as his singer, but Russell turned it down to concentrate on singing.
A first
In 1967, Capitol put out Russell's follow-up album, "... Such a Pretty World Today", and from it came a #1 single, "It's Such a Pretty World Today", which held the top spot on Billboard's Easy Listening Chart for nine weeks.
