Biography

Allison Anders is an American independent film director who studied at the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television and made her first feature, Border Radio, with Kurt Voss and Dean Lent while they were students. Gas Food Lodging (1992) earned her best new director awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and the National Society of Film Critics. She directed Mi Vida Loca, which premiered at Cannes, and Grace of My Heart, a music drama she made with Martin Scorsese as executive producer. With Voss she co-wrote and co-directed Sugar Town (1999), and she wrote and directed Things Behind the Sun (2001), a Showtime film that received a Peabody Award. She also directed episodes of Sex and the City, Cold Case, The L Word, and other series. Her honors include a MacArthur grant, and she teaches film at the University of California, Santa Barbara.
