Alex Lifeson
Biography
Alex Lifeson is a Canadian musician who became the guitarist and a founding member of Rush. In 1968 he helped start the band that became Rush, working with drummer John Rutsey and later bassist and singer Geddy Lee; Neil Peart joined in 1974, and that lineup lasted until the group first dissolved in 2015. Lifeson played electric and acoustic guitar and added backing vocals and some keyboards. In 1996 he and his Rush colleagues became officers in the Order of Canada, the first rock band given that group honor, and Rush entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2013. Rolling Stone placed him 98th among the 100 greatest guitarists, and a Guitar World readers' poll ranked him third. Beyond Rush he made the solo album Victor (1996), formed Envy of None, and created the Big Dirty Band for Trailer Park Boys: The Movie (2006). He also made cameos in Trailer Park Boys media and other television and films.

Early training
Lifeson began his formal musical education on the viola, but he gave it up for the guitar when he was 12.
Early training
Lifeson taught himself guitar for the most part, though a friend from high school gave him classical guitar lessons in 1971. That instruction went on for about a year and a half.
First role
Lifeson made his first screen appearance in the 1973 Canadian documentary Come on Children, playing himself and credited under his birth name.
A role that slipped away
Lifeson was the original choice for Dr. Funtime in The Drunk and On Drugs Happy Funtime Hour, but the part went to Maury Chaykin because of scheduling conflicts.
Behind the camera
Lifeson's first major work outside his band is a solo project called Victor, which came out in 1996. The name Victor was used for both the artist and the album title.
