Biography

David Maysles was an American documentary filmmaker who, with his brother Albert, helped pioneer the Direct Cinema style. Born in Boston, he studied psychology at Boston University, served in the army in West Germany, and worked in Hollywood as a production assistant on Bus Stop and on The Prince and the Showgirl, two films starring Marilyn Monroe, before joining Albert to shoot documentaries behind the Iron Curtain. By 1960 the brothers had joined Drew Associates, where David handled sound, and in 1962 they formed Maysles Films. Together they made more than 30 films, among them Gimme Shelter (1970) and Grey Gardens, and David shared a Primetime Emmy for the 1985 film Vladimir Horowitz: The Last Romantic. Salesman and Grey Gardens were later preserved in the National Film Registry.
