Plot summary
In 2018, Beto O'Rourke, a Democratic congressman from El Paso, runs for a Texas Senate seat, seeking to unseat Republican incumbent Ted Cruz. Little known outside his district at the start, he sets out to visit all 254 Texas counties and builds his campaign without political action committee money. The film tracks the race as issues such as President Donald Trump's push for a border wall and gun control, intensified by mass shootings including the one at Santa Fe High School, take center stage in public debate. It also shows the effect on O'Rourke's family, who describe a commitment far larger than his earlier congressional run, and discussion of what the result might mean for the 2020 elections.
