Plot summary
Bessie Faro's husband Johnny is killed when his plane goes down near Veracruz, Mexico, and the air cargo company he ran is deep in debt. At the airline's terminal she comes upon a packet of baseball cards her husband had written on, and she sees in the markings the system he once used for betting slips at race tracks. The cards point to bank accounts held under the names of the players pictured. Armed with durable power of attorney, Bessie travels to Panama, the Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Berlin and Athens to withdraw what she can. In Cairo she gets to know Fergus Lamb, who runs a food aid operation shipping grain into Egypt.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ruby Cairo (1992)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- According to Andie MacDowell, Clifford, the film's director, was stoned throughout filming, a claim from the actress who starred in Ruby Cairo.
- For Liam Neeson's Fergus Lamb to hit a golf ball from the top of the Great Pyramid of Giza into the Mena House Hotel pool 800 yards away, production designer Richard Sylbert duplicated the pyramid in Los Angeles because of desert sunlight and access restrictions, and Pacific Studios made a 27-foot tall, 100-foot wide Chromatrans image of the Cairo skyline.
- An unnamed on-set censor in Egypt covered the camera lens with her hand, and censorship board officials, displeased by the selection of "shabby" locations, closed the set and confiscated 22 cans of exposed film negative, which were returned only after a month of negotiations with the Egyptian Department of Antiquities.
- Olympia Dukakis was reportedly hired for the scenes taking place in Veracruz, but she does not appear in the final film, so her part was cut.
- A crew led by an uncredited Richard Lund got permission to climb the Great Pyramid with five cameras, slept beside the equipment and took five photographs at 7:30 a.m., just one hour after sunrise; despite all that effort, the golf shot is not in the final film.
