Plot summary
Samara Morgan's videotape keeps moving from hand to hand, because each person who watches it makes a copy and finds someone else to show it to. Around the tape a subculture has formed: viewers call their groups rings, post videos of their experiences online, and delay passing the curse along for as long as they dare. Eddie tells Jake Pierce that nobody has lasted to the seventh day, and that those who did died, and he asks Jake to record everything he sees. Jake is the newest member of a ring, and Tim has been chosen to take the tape from him. Vanessa says she wants Jake to reach day seven. Then Jake begins seeing visions of Samara wherever he goes, and a dream of Samara grabbing his arm leaves a bruise.
