Plot summary
A young man in a rural Ukrainian village of the 1990s is a delinquent and petty thug. A mafia-linked gang under a leader called Skull threatens his family; joining the Ukrainian mafia puts him beyond Skull's reach, and his boss gives him the nickname Rhino for his headstrong nature. He takes quickly to criminal work, acting as hired muscle in protection rackets, abductions, arson and killings. The pay is steady, he gains men of his own, and he marries his pregnant girlfriend at a lavish wedding. By his thirties he and his crew act largely on their own, so long as the larger organization receives its cut.

- Work on Rhino was suspended in 2014 when Russian security services arrested writer-director Oleh Sentsov, and resumed only after he was released in a September 2019 Russia-Ukraine prisoner exchange.
- Writer-director Oleh Sentsov said he made Rhino because Ukraine had not made any films about its crime-infested "wild 90s", and that the title gangster was based on one of his own friends.
