Plot summary
A chain of episodes passes through the occupied territories in eastern Ukraine, one character handing the next episode its lead. The material comes from reporters' accounts, from amateur video posted online and from what people living there recall. In one episode a reporter from Germany and a cameraman from Ukraine sit with soldiers whose uniforms carry no insignia and who claim to be local militia. Another episode follows a formal ceremony at a registry office, where two militia members are married. The war that began in 2014 continues between the Ukrainian government and the self-proclaimed republics in Donetsk and Luhansk, leaving people in the region to get by as best they can.

- The film's episodes are reconstructions of real events taken from professional reports, amateur YouTube videos and the memories of local residents. - The lynching of a captured Ukrainian volunteer by residents of the occupied territories, staged in the film, actually took place in the town of Zugres.
- The scene of a solemn ceremony at the Novorossiysk registry office recreates the real wedding of two militia members nicknamed Kukla and BMW.
