Plot summary
In the Galician town of Stanislav, 1868, a fire destroys Doctor Anger's home. His wife is killed, and so are the parents of Stefania Chornenko, a servant's daughter. The doctor saves his own daughter Adelia and Stefania, and raises the two girls in one house, where they grow up close while Stefania's place is as the maid, cooking and serving for the Anger household. Twenty-five years later, Adelia marries the sculptor Petro, and the bond between the two women comes to rest on jealousy, care and manipulation. Joseph Ridnyi, the man Stefania loved before, returns to the town as a married priest.
